About this place
- Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport opened as Gibbs Field in 1937. In 1940 it was leased to train Army Air Corps cadets. The City bought it in 1947 and renamed it in 1950. Source
- It is named for John J. Montgomery, credited with the first controlled flight in a fixed-wing aircraft: a glider, over Otay Mesa in 1883. Source
- It has three runways, the longest 4,598 feet. Traffic ranges from private planes to air ambulances and flight training, and the FAA classes it as a reliever for San Diego International. Source

New video and witness accounts emerge as federal investigators probe deadly Montgomery Field crash
The FAA's preliminary report says the Cessna's left wing dipped as it came in to land, the plane appeared to stall, and it spun into the ground. The NTSB, which is leading the investigation, says the pilots were aborting the landing at the time. Its investigations usually take a year or more.

It crashed and burned on the runway on September 7. Crews put out the fire and contained a fuel spill, and the airport was closed while they worked.
